Tanzania has a number of laws on the statute books which criminalise expression including the Newspapers Act of 1976 and the Penal Code of 1945 which contain a number of provisions which criminalise expression and in particular which contain overbroad definitions of sedition and which also criminalise defamation, false news, and defamation of foreign dignitaries.
The Tanzania Media Council has made recommendations to government for a Media Services Bill which aims, among other things, to repeal almost all of the above provisions.
